World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day always observed each year on September 10th. It’s a day designed to provide commitment and action to prevent suicides, since starting in 2003. Dr. Tyler Pritchard is a psychology professor at Grenfell Campus and a provincially registered psychologist in the western region. He says some people find still find it tough to talk about suicide. Pritchard says words like “failure” and “weak” come to mind. Some feel it brings shame to their family. He says there’s been a lot of research on suicide but there are still some myths that exist. Pritchard says if someone is talking about suicide, it needs to be taken very seriously and shows the person needs support. He says research from the last half of people who die from suicide have no history of mental disorders. Pritchard says suicide is preventable but is very hard to predict Pritchard was speaking on Bayfm’s the PlainTruth.
