Between 2023-2024, this average has more than doubled, with an annual average of 36 deaths attributed solely to cocaine.

RCMP and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have raised  serious concerns about the rise in overdose deaths in this province. From 2018-2022, the province had an annual average of 14 toxicity deaths attributed solely to cocaine.  Between 2023-2024, this average has more than doubled, with an annual average of 36 deaths attributed solely to cocaine. Yesterday in the capital city, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Nash Denic says synthetic opiods are here and they are extremely more potent than cocaine and up to 70 percent more potent than fentanyl. He says just the tiniest amount of these opioids can lead to death. RCMP inspector David Emberley says the cocaine police are seizing is testing in the ninety percent purity range. He says it’s the number one cause of overdose deaths in NL.  Harm reduction consultant Jane Henderson says addiction and abuse has an urgent need for compassion.
