Following the morning sunrise ceremony and breakfast, there will be a welcome from Elder Dr. Calvin White and Elder Dr. O’Dell Pike.
The 2nd annual Elmastukwek Mawio’mi will take place August 12th at the Blow me Down ski Trail in Corner Brook. Sherry Dean is Ward Councillor for Corner Brook with Qalipu First Nations, and is also the chairperson of the Elmastukwek Mawio’mi planning committee. She says Elmastukwek is the Mi’kmaq word for Bay of Islands and Corner Brook. Dean says the day will begin at 6 am with a sunrise ceremony followed by breakfast. “We will then have a welcome from our patrons who are Elder Dr. Calvin White and Elder Dr. O’Dell Pike,” she says. “There will be other teachings followed by lunch.” Dean says after lunch they will have a welcome from Qalipu Chief Brendan Mitchell. “We will have a tribute to Elder George Paul who wrote and gifted the Honour song to the people as a way of healing and it’s become our national anthem,” she says. “After that it's the Grand Entry and the fun begins.” Dean says the whole day is filled with activities for young people.
