The idea for new stairs leading to the beach of Brakes Cove came last year while Bill Best was thinking about the rough state of the nearly 100 steps being used. The Cox’s Cove resident says after some community togetherness and fundraising, they raised the money for the project quickly.Best says the first steps to the Brakes Cove were built by Cox’s Cove settler Howard White in the 1950’s. Thirty years later, the steps were rebuilt by the Culture Committee. Best says he’s amazed by the generosity and help from the community.Best says the Brakes Cove Memorial Stairs are “such a beautiful place to sit and watch the sunsets, and see the efforts and contributions form the community.”
