Assistant Director of Engineering Aaron O’Brien says for the  first couple of weeks there will be a grace period and garbage will  be picked up, however a critical rule is to not put recyclables on top of garbage inside the bin.

When the City of Corner Brook launches its new automated garbage collection and  dual stream recycling program on Monday, staff expect there will be bumps in the road. On BayFm with Lenny Benoit this morning, Assistant Director of Engineering, Aaron O’Brien says one of the  big questions they’re getting is how to place the bins so the automated arm can pick it up. The bins have an arrow stamped on the lid and the arrow points towards the road. Keep a one metre clearance around the bin so it can be picked up by the arm. O’Brien says for the  first couple of weeks there will be a grace period and garbage will  be picked up, however a critical rule is to not put recyclables on top of garbage inside the bin.

O’Brien says there are two streams of recycling and for the week starting on Monday, plastics and cans will be collected and the following week it will be paper, fibre, and cardboard will be collected.

Meanwhile, there are some changes to garbage by-laws that include an opportunity for non-profit groups with residential type garbage to have it collected by the city. As well, O’Brien says there have been discussions about the size of the bins, so larger families or those with special circumstances. Residents will have to pay for the extra bin. If any resident has not yet received a garbage bin, call 709-637-1666.
