Stem cells are immature cells that can develop into any cell present in the bloodstream. Without stem cells, the body cannot make the blood cells needed for the immune system to function.

Representatives from Canadian Blood Services are in Corner Brook today collecting stem cells for research. Spokesperson Gord Skiffington says they will be at Grenfell Campus from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and again this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. Stem cells are immature cells that can develop into any cell present in the bloodstream. Without stem cells, the body cannot make the blood cells needed for the immune system to function. Skiffington says they want people ages 17-35 to become stem cell donors. He says nearly 1000 Canadians are waiting for life saving stem cell transplant and these cells treat over 80 diseases or disorders. The goal is to swab over 3000 students at campuses across the country. Skiffington says it takes about 15 minutes to become a donor. They take four swabs  on the inside of cheeks. The event will take place in the Arts and Science building Atrium.
