Corner Brook's new council was sworn in last night, Mayor Linda Chaisson is the second woman to hold the role

After 16 years as a councillor, Mayor Chaisson says as the 11th Mayor and second woman to ever hold the role, it’s important to acknowledge the record number of women participating in the electoral process. 

In some communities, the candidate with the second highest number of votes during a municipal election, becomes the Deputy Mayor. However, in the city of Corner Brook, the position is determined through a nomination process with the newly appointed council. At last night’s first public meeting for the newly elected council, Mayor Linda Chaisson called for nominations for the Deputy Mayor’s seat and only one person, Pam Keeping, was nominated and turns out, she did get the second highest number of votes. Congratulations Deputy Mayor Keeping!

After 16 years as a councillor, Mayor Chaisson thanked her family, friends and supporters after she quickly took the lead with nearly 53 percent of the votes early in last week’s election. She says as the 11th Mayor and second woman to ever hold the role, it’s important to acknowledge the record number of women participating in the electoral process. 

Chaisson spoke to the new team encouraging an open dialogue and to value each others’ perspectives and together, they can make decisions to keep the city moving forward. 

Elected councillors include Sherry Dean, Eddie Kennedy, Donna Luther, Steve Perchard, and Donna Wheeler.
