Starting in the new year, Corner Brook residents will have new city-owned garbage carts, which will be picked up using an arm on a garbage truck. The city is responsible for the cost and maintenance, and these containers must be left at the property if the resident moves. At this week’s public meeting, the contract Councillor Pam Keeping the city awarded the contract Councillor Pam Keeping says five companies submitted proposals to supply the garbage bins with prices ranging from $99.23 per bin to the lowest of $79.60 per bin from Schaefer Systems International Limited. Schaefer's submission was the most cost-efficient and includes assembly, household delivery, and freight. Each registered property/unit will receive a registered garbage cart, delivered directly to households by the successful proponent. The bins will feature the City logo and an RFID tag to capture delivery data.
City Manager Darren Charters says the RFID tag will be a locator for the bins. Assistant Director of Engineering, Aaron O’Brien explains how this new system will save the city money, upwards of $90K per year. He says the two major issues with the current collection system are contamination charges and reduced tipping fees for having dual-stream recycling. The City will receive 500 spare bins for future use, along with a range of spare parts to support ongoing maintenance and repairs.
