Starting January 1st, the city of Corner Brook will be rolling out a new automated garbage collection system, which means all residents will be getting a new cart at no charge. Kirsten Mercer is the city’s Sustainability Development Coordinator and says staff are busy assembling around 10,000 of these wheeled carts which will be picked up by using an arm on the garbage truck. She says they will also be starting a dual stream recycling, paper and cardboard in one blue bag, plastics and metals in another. The new carts have capacity to hold four garbage bags and have locking lids, meaning trash won’t end up on the street. Mercer says increases will be covered by the city and should not result in tax increases.
