Parsons says while it was great news to hear the $20 million announcement in last year’s provincial budget, this is discouraging and the need for affordable housing here is huge. NL Housing issued a tender for the construction of 50 new units in October 2024.
Housing is now restructuring the tender call into multiple smaller tenders, as they believe this will attract more bidders and allow for quicker construction starts and completions.” Parsons says he understands this will take some time and the bottom line is it just needs to start. The first of these tenders are expected to be issued this month. Parsons says this is a big job with limited proponents to handle such a job. He says in the meantime, people are staying in city hotels without support. Construction of all 50 homes was anticipated to be complete by 2026.
