Foodbanks Canada has completed a hunger count and here in Corner Brook, donations are down and demand is up. That’s according to Damien Power of the Bay of Islands Foodbank Network. He says they’re seeing on average, an extra ten families a month looking for help and they’ve provided 1,013 services of food to date. Power says numbers are indicating there’s a 28 percent decrease in food donations and food purchases are up 20 percent over last year. He says they’re relying on consistent donors and new donors to help. Board Chair Maurice MacDonald says the next opportunity to donate to the foodbank will be during the Santa Claus Parade on December 2nd donations will be accepted. The Tim Hortons Holiday Smile cookie fundraiser takes place November 18-24 and all proceeds will be shared between the network and Tims Camps. Macdonald says there will be a Mummers Parade on December 14th, 3 p.m. at the Civic Square which will be a fundraiser for the foodbank. He says people can make a monetary donation in someone else’s name and the network will send them a Christmas card recognizing the donation. Call 709-634-2655. Food donations can be made at bins found in local grocery stores. Check out the BOI facebook page for more information.
