Always keep garbage properly stored and disposed of on the designated collection day.

When a black bear ventures into town on a stroll, there are things residents can do to prevent this unwanted visitor. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is reminding the public to take precautions to avoid attracting bears. Always keep garbage properly stored and disposed of on the designated collection day. Where bears have been sighted, pet owners should keep their animals inside or under close supervision.

Never feed wildlife. When bears become habituated to humans, their natural fear fades and they take more chances to access food. Never approach a bear and if one spots you, remain calm and give it space to get away. Back away, don’t run and avoid eye contact. Never get between a bear and her cubs.
