The scammer tells the victim that a loved one, usually a grand child, is in some sort of legal trouble and is currently in jail, requiring money for bail.

RCMP NL is warning the public that the “Grandparent” scam is circulating once again and in one case, a report came from the west coast. This scam is known to target seniors, who are typically more trusting and oftentimes live alone. It involves a phone call from someone posing as a lawyer or police officer. The scammer tells the victim that a loved one, usually a grand child, is in some sort of legal trouble and is currently in jail, requiring money for bail. Directions for payment can include a requested email money transfer or, less often, a pickup of the cash payment in person.
