After returning to base from another day of searching for a missing man, Bay of Islands Search & Rescue volunteers responded to another call Friday night.
Emergency crews were called to an incident at approximately 10:40 p.m. Friday night after an injured hiker had suffered a serious fall on a slope east of Steady Brook near the TCH.
Sixteen BOISAR members responded, alongside Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services paramedics and Steady Brook–Little Rapids Fire Department. Due to the difficult terrain and severity of the injuries, 103 Search and Rescue Squadron was called in from Gander for an aerial extraction.
BOISAR members cleared an extraction zone through heavy tree cover and set up a low-angle rope system to safely move the hiker. Search and Rescue Technicians were lowered from a Cormorant helicopter, provided medical care, and transported the patient to a waiting ambulance in Corner Brook.
