It's coming from wild fires in the Maritimes, mainly Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

UPDATE: A Special Air Quality Statement has just been issued and is in effect for most of western, central, and northeastern Newfoundland

Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Smoke from distant forest fires may cause a reduction to air quality.

    Time span: today.

Remarks: Smoke transported from a wildfire in in Nova Scotia is drifting across the region. Much of the smoke is settling near the ground and contributing to reduced air quality. Associated haze may also likely give the sun a reddish appearance. The swath of smoke is expected to move north of Newfoundland later today or this evening but will be monitored for any changes.

Earlier Story: There's a lot of smoke along parts of the west coast today, especially in the Corner Brook area but there are no wildfires in our region. Bayfm has been getting a lot of calls about the amount of smoke in the air. It's coming from wild fires in the Maritimes, mainly Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. These conditions could last for the next 24 hours with the current wind direction. Keep windows closed and turn off air conditioners.
