The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture hosted a FireSmart event for media only in St. John’s this week. It was an effort to create greater awareness about FireSmart Canada services and programs, and to demonstrate safe FireSmart practices, which reduce the risk of wildfire on residential properties. She says keep grass to 10cm or below, removing flammable materials, cleaning gutters, and keeping wood piles at least 30 metres away from a home. Richards says evergreen trees should be kept a safe distance from the home within 10-30 metres from your home and mulch used in flower beds is highly flammable.
