The Progressive Conservative Leadership hopeful says people want to come here but they can’t get a direct flight, and that is really affecting our tourism industry. Wakeham says opening air access to major hubs in Canada, the US, and Europe would make this province much more attractive. He also believes government can work with the airlines to make this happen, not necessarily through subsidies but through flight guarantees on the number of passengers. Wakeham points to neighbouring Nova Scotia which subsidizes airlines to establish new routes from that province to destinations in the United States and Europe.
