Mayor Jim Parsons says an increase in ridership is a first for the city and people are actually unable to get a seat on the bus.
The City of Corner Brook is seeing such an increase with the current bussing system, two larger new buses will be added soon to double capacity. Mayor Jim Parsons says this is a first for the city and people are actually unable to get a seat on the bus. Years ago, the city had the big buses, which downsized, but lately ridership is going up. The Mayor thinks this is a combination of newcomers and more people being accustomed with using transit. As part of the new agreement, any transit revenue over $100,000 will be shared with the city. This was not the case before and Parsons says the city is also in talks with government about free bus passes for those receiving GIS or Income Support. The city will also increase its annual operating subsidy to the transit contractor by $120,000.
