Implementing the $150 Waste Management Levy allows the City to enhance service levels and reduce contamination without sacrificing other operational budgets.

Corner Brook councillor Donna Luther says increasing taxes for people was something they knew they could not do when working on the 2026 budget. At last night’s public meeting, Luther presented the $44.7M plan and although spending is up by nearly 7 percent, the mill rate for property owners and businesses will stay the same.

There will be a new $150 Waste Management Levy. Mayor Linda Chaisson says contamination fees have been continually going up and this year, the garbage collection contract has gone up 30 percent. Implementing the $150 Waste Management Levy allows the City to enhance service levels and reduce contamination without sacrificing other operational budgets. This revenue goes beyond simple household collection to fund our complete waste strategy, including spring cleanups, leaf collection, and vital public education.

On Bayfm this morning, with Lenny Benoit, Chaisson says they debated adding the fee and Luther says recycling is not a fad. The city’s new dual stream garbage collection is due to start January 12th.
