Opposition leader Tony Wakeham is wondering why, after ten years, there is no commitment or timeline regarding the opening of the cancer unit at the new hospital in Corner Brook. He says “With key positions still unfilled, including radiation oncologists, radiotherapy and medical physicists, clearly there is still no commitment for cancer care in the new Western Memorial Regional Hospital.” Wakeham noted he has raised the issue in the House of Assembly many times but all he herald were empty promises. He says acute care patients are being kept in hallways in the new hospital because of a lack of beds while the old hospital sits empty.
