Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro has issued a power warning for the island, effective Saturday morning, January 24, due to ongoing conditions at the Bay d’Espoir hydroelectric plant and higher-than-normal electricity demand.

The warning is being put in place as crews continue to deal with frazil ice buildup at the Bay d’Espoir hydroelectric facility, a condition that can restrict water flow and reduce power generation. With demand for electricity remaining high, customers are being asked to take steps to conserve power to help maintain system stability.

NL Hydro says customers can help by:

    • Limiting the use of hot water and major appliances such as dishwashers, clothes washers, and dryers

    • Turning off unnecessary lighting

    • Turning down heat in rooms that are not in use

Teams remain on site at Bay d’Espoir, working with divers and specialized equipment to remove ice and restore full generating capacity as safely and quickly as possible.

Hydro says it will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as the situation evolves.
