Teachers are pleased to be part of the highlights in last week’s provincial budget. Four hundred teachers and learning assistants will be hired with a $20 million increase which will go to $44 million next year. Trent Langdon is the President of the Newfoundland Labrador Teachers Association. He says they’re impressed with this level of vision and finally feel that the government has made a statement of dedication to teachers. Langdon says these assistants are there to support teachers as well as students with things like lower reading rates and math scores, but also classroom management and supporting children with special needs
$24 million is going to expand the school food programming in all pre-K to grade nine students. Langdon says this will have an impact on a child’s well-being which impacts the well-being of the family. As well, $5 million will be invested in technology devices and infrastructure in schools, which will increase to $10 million annually next year.
