There’s a report out today that says NL is living in a child care desert. The report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is listed on its website. It found that of the nearly 2 million children in Canada, nearly half were living in an area without enough child care spaces. NL ranked second highest to Saskatchewan, with 79 percent of younger children living in a child care desert. Opposition education critic Barry Petten says he’s even hearing of people sub-letting child care spaces while they are off work. He says it’s a failure on government’s part. As government rolls out $10 a day child care across the country, the CCPA sys there simply aren’t enough child care spaces to meet the demand. They say more public planning and management is needed.
