“Charge into Fire Safety” is the theme as Fire Prevention Week events take place throughout the western region. Phil Brinston is the Captain of Prevention and Inspection with the Corner Brook Fire Department. He says the focus this year is lithium-ion batteries and if they are misused, damaged, or improperly charged, they can overheat, start a fire, or explode. Brinston says this message will be brought to schools and an open house with a BBQ this Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at the fire station.
He says most of the electronics used in homes daily — including smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, and toys — are powered by lithium-ion batteries. Use batteries from trusted brands (don't trust the internet!), do not charge improperly, do not-over charge, do not let them overheat and do not expose them to damage.
