The province’s police watchdog says a civilian male has died as the result of a police shooting in the capital city. Michael King, Director of the Serious Incident Response Team of Newfoundland and Labrador (SIRT-NL), says the officer was injured but has been released from hospital. He says a shooting happened on Elizabeth Avenue at approximately 10:50am this morning. As SIRT-NL is still in the process of locating and notifying the family of the deceased, no other information is available. Meanwhile, shortly after 12:30 this afternoon, RNC confirmed there had been a police shooting in St. John’s, but no other details will be released. About 15 minutes later, government issued a news release stating, as a result of an incident at the Regatta Plaza Employment Centre, clients seeking services can avail of them through the Duckworth Street centre, and that mental health and crisis supports are available. SIRT-NL is looking for anyone who may have camera footage of the Regatta Place between 9:30 and 11:30 this morning.
