Residents are reminded that the HST break on essential items begins tomorrow (Saturday, December 14) and will be in place until February 15, 2025. The tax break on essentials was announced by the Government of Canada on November 21st and is being supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. This affordability measure will provide an estimated $48 million in provincial tax relief.
The tax exemption for essentials applies to:
- Prepared foods, including vegetable trays, pre-made meals and salads, and sandwiches.
- Restaurant meals, whether dine-in, takeout or delivery.
- Snacks, including chips, candy and granola bars.
- Beer, wine, cider and pre-mixed alcoholic beverages up to 7 per cent ABV.
- Children’s clothing and footwear, car seats and diapers.
- Children’s toys, such as board games, dolls and video game consoles.
- Books, print newspapers and puzzles for all ages.
- Christmas trees.
