Qalipu Chief Jenny Brake says it will pay immediate returns to Nations members for social and cultural programming and will sustain economic development for the communities.

The 140 year old shipyard in St. John’s has been sold and Qalipu First Nations is one of the owners. Qalipu First Nation, the Membertou First Nation, and Horizon Naval Engineering have acquired the port and the Newdock transaction will occur in early October. This is one of the most significant First Nations business investments in this province’s history. Qalipu Chief Jenny Brake says it will pay immediate returns to Nations members for social and cultural programming and will sustain economic development for the communities. Horizon Naval Engineering President Sean Leet says Newdock is a very successful business in its own right and no changes are needed at this world class ship repair facility. Leet says they’re excited to be working on a new Indigenous Initiative and are looking at an expansion. A large talent pool will be needed to support growth in the blue economy and the Newdock group intends to provide training.
