RCMP have confirmed two people died in Saturday’s plane crash near the Deer Lake Airport. Cpl Jesse O’Donaghey says there were only two men onboard the plane, a lone passenger aged 27 and the 54 year old pilot. Both men were pronounced deceased at the scene.

O’Donaghey says officers will be on site for the next few days assisting the investigation by the Transportation Safety Board. This includes security at the crash site, to preserve any evidence and to ensure the safety of the public. RCMP NL is also supporting investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) in the ongoing investigation into this crash.

The twin engine crashed minutes after departing from the airport in Deer Lake. O’Donaghey says it was a dynamic situation and the Trans Canada Highway had to be closed for hours. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
