The Salvation Army Kettle Campaign kicked off in Corner Brook yesterday but the fundraising goal is a little less than last year’s. This year’s goal is to raise $105,000. Major Brian Wheeler says the kettle is a traditional part of Christmas, ever since 1925 in Corner Brook. He says one in five struggle to cover basic needs. Major Wheeler says $108,000 was raised last year and 669 local families received Christmas hampers and 395 children had toys. Less than 4 years ago, the Salvation Army raised just over 80,000, and Major Wheeler says the increase in support from the community has been phenomenal.
