Communications head Conor Curtis, says the announcement there will be an emissions cap is welcomed news and is a first step in bringing emissions under control.

Sierra Club Canada believes that without an effective cap on the oil and gas sector other sectors and Canadians would need to carry the weight of reducing their emissions to offset the emissions of the oil and gas industry. Communications head Conor Curtis, says the announcement there will be an emissions cap is welcomed news and is a first step in bringing emissions under control. He says they’re hopeful targets will be more progressive. Curtis says they would also like to see a fast implementation of the cap before 2026 and that all loopholes are closed. He says the federal government is set to miss its 2030 target to cut carbon emissions by at least 40 per cent below 2005 levels. Curtis says while carbon pricing has always been a thing, it’s not fair to ask Canadians to foot the bill. He says we can’t  ask people to do that and allow the biggest emitter in the country, at 27 percent and making huge profits, to not have to pay. Curtis says two recent independent polls found 7 out of 10 Canadians support the cap.
