A community research agreement has been signed between the Benoit’s Cove Indian Band and the Marine Biomass Innovation Project. A signing ceremony took place Friday at the Humber Arm South Town Hall. Dr Raymond Thomas started this project while working as an environmental science professor at Grenfell Campus but has since relocated to Ontario. He is the Principle Investigator of the Project and says it involves working with global researchers and local industries to develop marine based business through repurposing of marine biomass in western NL He says upwards of 70 percent of biomass may be discarded as waste and they are looking at ways to achieve 100 percent utilization. The project started during October of 2021. Thomas says it’s an agreement between the communities and several institutions across Canada, like MUN, Dalhousie, Mt Saint Vincent and more. He says this can also help improve conditions in Bay of Islands communities. Thomas says he hopes this unique project can help transform awareness of the marine biomass sector.
