March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada, a time to be aware of various scams and fraud schemes, as well as learn ways to protect yourself. Katie Giffin is a Research and Action Coordinator with the Corner Brook Status of Women. She says her work with technology facilitated gender based violence is similar to fraud and various technology forms are used by these perpetrators. Giffin says they also use AI to create fake photos, videos, or voice recordings in order to ask people for money over the phone. She says one form of identity theft and fraud is known as catfishing, which is online scam where someone pretends to be another person to gain trust, although some do it just for personal amusement.
