Yvette Coffey, President of the Registered Nurses Union NL says recruitment and retention of nurses still remains a critical issue here and across the country and despite ongoing efforts, nursing is still facing high vacancies.
This is International Nurses Day, which is recognized globally each year as a time to mark the contributions nurses make to society. On last week’s edition of “The Plain Truth,” the guest was Yvette Coffey, President of the Registered Nurses Union NL. She says this year’s theme is “Our nurses, our future,” and the future of healthcare relies on nurses. Coffey says recruitment and retention of nurses still remains a critical issue here and across the country and despite ongoing efforts, nursing is still facing high vacancies. She says as well, existing nurses need to feel valued and supported. She says they’ve been advocating for this for some time. Coffey says even with all the challenges after 35 years in nursing, she would still choose it as a career.
